Game On

Being a parent means that it can be difficult to find time to go out on a date. But, it is still important to make time for taking a break from being a parent and just focus on being the two of you.

While we don’t go out that much, we have started making date time on Fridays by playing a board game while enjoying some wine after our daughter has gone to bed.

This is the perfect solution because we don’t have to leave and we get to dive into our collection of board games, which doesn’t cost any additional money.

Depending on what types of games you like to play, you could spend all evening playing or just an hour. For us, we usually like to find a game that takes about an hour and half to play.

When you are looking for a new board game it can be difficult to figure out which game you want to play because there is a huge selection available both in stores and online. Here are just a few of our favorite selections.

“Betrayal at House on the Hill”

We really enjoy this game a lot. The premise is that your character (or characters if you are just playing with two people) have stumbled upon this house. You take your time building the house by drawing room cards and laying them down.

Once you draw too many “haunt” cards, that is when the fun really happens.

Depending on what card was drawn, what room you were in and who drew it will decide on what “story” in the book you will follow.

The final part of the game is following the instructions and watching the scenario play out.

Depending on how long it takes to draw the final “haunt” card, the game can take anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half to complete.

“Machi Koro: Bright Lights, Big City”

If you are a fan of the computer game “Sim City” then you would like this game.

You spend time building up your city, winning money based off of what business you put in your town and trying to make your city bigger than your opponent’s.

What I really like about this game is that there are different ways to play and different strategies on how to win.

Plus, having a little friendly competition makes it extra fun.

“Mysterium”

If you are looking for a game that will test your mental connection as a couple, then you will want to try Mysterium.

In this game the set up is sort of like the game Clue. You have to find your suspect, the weapon and the place where the murder happened.

However, one of you is the ghost and the other person is a psychic. It is up to the ghost to use beautiful cards of fanciful images to try and relay this information to your partner. You can’t say anything, but just give them the card and they to try and interperate it to solve the case.

These cards can help you see if you two are on the same wavelength.

These are a few of our favorite board games to play on our date night. But, you don’t need to have in-depth games to play. Just a simple round of a card game or even video games can make a quiet night at home more exciting.

Eating in the Burg: Kaya

This past weekend we had the opportunity to have a wonderful, but rare, date night. We had the opportunity to see the Pittsburgh stop of the “All Hail” tour of the podcast “Welcome to Night Vale.”

But before we took in the amazing show, we went out to eat.

Since I am a vegetarian, and Kev is most of the time (although he wasn’t this weekend), we had to find a place that was near the theater but also had a couple of veggie options.

I was surprised how little options the restaurants in the Cultural District had. A lot were closed on a Sunday evening, but a lot didn’t even have an option that didn’t contain any meat.

Luckily, we decided to head to The Strip District because it wasn’t that far away.

In the strip there was is a great restaurant named Kaya that features Caribbean cooking, and luckily for me a lot of great vegetarian options.

During the month of April Kaya highlighted the island of Cuba to feature their cuisine and drinks.

We decided to kick off our dinner with the Cuban themed beverage Kaya Libre, a combination of rum, lime and Mexican Coke.

I ordered the Trumpet Mushroom, Ramp & Asparagus Paella: squash, tomatoes, green beans, wild mushrooms, roasted red pepper, greens, pineapple. It was so delicious! The mushrooms had a great meaty texture and the asparagus really brightened the dish.

Kevin decided to continue his culinary tour of Cuba and decided to order two tasting plates: Ropa Vieja Jubilee Hilltop Ranch flank steak, sofrito, peppers, onions, green olives, rice and Mojo Pork Black beans, cilantro, jalapeño, pickled red onions.

He said that both dishes were really great and full of good flavor. He said he liked the Ropa Veija just a smidge more than the Mojo. He said the seasoning of the Ropa was a little more up front.

With the drinks and dinners, it was a wonderful meal full of flavor and I didn’t feel like I was being cheated because I am a vegetarian.

If you are ever in The Strip District you should check out Kaya. You won’t be disappointed.

A Romantic Step Back in Time

Being the parents of a toddler, the opportunity to go out on a date is really special.

This past week we celebrated our 9th wedding anniversary and had the opportunity to have dinner at one of our new favorite places, The Historic Summit Inn Resort.

The hotel was first open to the public in 1907 and was designed as a playground for the many millionaires that lived in the city only five minutes away (At one time, this city had one of the highest rates of millionaires per capita in all the world, according to the resort’s website.)

It used to be a ski resort, but unfortunately that part of the resort has long been closed.

However, the resort still has two swimming pools, several ballrooms, a beautiful veranda that overlooks the valley and city below and more.

Today the resort is still beautiful and has that retro and romantic feel.

When you walk into the resort, it is like you are stepping back in time. You are greeted by a beautiful split staircase.

Before our dinner, we went and looked around the resort and found the indoor swimming pool, bar, saw a high school reunion and a beautiful bride on her wedding day.

We were seated in the dining room near a gorgeous stone fireplace and our table had this beautiful Tiffany style lamp.

One of the things that I really liked about the menu was that it was seasonal. There were a variety of different dishes that were autumn themed including an elk stew, pumpkin cheesecake and more.

I kicked off the meal with an apple cider martini, Kevin had a glass of wine, and we split the most amazing appetizer, a baked Brie with crostini and strawberry compote with chunks of strawberries. It was AMAZING!

I was really excited when I saw that the menu had a butternut squash ravioli. Not only do I love this dish, but it was what I had for dinner at our wedding, so it made it extra special.

This ravioli also had a brown butter sauce (not the most healthy of options) with a drizzle of cream and two leaves of sage with butternut squash on top.

Kevin opted for the Eggplant Parmesan with pasta, which he said was delicious.

We also had dessert. I had the summit chocolate cake and Kevin had the flourless chocolate cake, which we both finished before I had the chance to take a photo, but it was both beautiful and delicious.

It was a wonderful night, that my hubby had arranged and surprised me with and I was so thankful we had the chance to enjoy dinner and connect with each other.
